Music and age
Do you remember what you listened to when you were in jr high... I do. I was listening to NOFX, Operation Ivy and some other jazzz like Less Than Jake. Well what are you listening to now. I bet its not the same. Me and stove were talking and we came to the conclusion that you grow out of musical stages. like NOFX and stuff was juvinle Punk rock. I totaly agree with this. I mean sure its fun to listen to once and a while but its not something you listen to alot. Like stove said "they had it all... fast music, funny lyrics..." But now I can't listen to them. I'm stuck on Pop punk like; MTX, screeching weasel, nerf herder... but the list doesnt end there. I of course like some bands that dont really fit into that catagorie. Like One Step Behind, Ben Folds and some hardcore music.
Do you think you will still be listening to what your listening to now, ten fifteen years from now. Will you think the same as you do now? Probably not. Things will change you, whether its the people your around or the places you go. You will change some what.
Some people think that around 18 - 20 or so you meet your musical maximum. You have tasted everything at the buffet and now you picked what you like and are sticking with it. I think this is true in some cases. But in alot of other cases peoples musical taste changes. Take for example... I think if I was in my late 20s about 5 years ago I probably would listen to something like "Dave Mathew's Band", because it sounds like it would hit people in that age group.
So when your 50 will you still be rocking the ramones? Will you get out your queers records and rock out? Or will you grow out of it in time? These are questions you really cant know the answer to but it's cool to think about it.

Here's my opinion:
I used to be all into NOFX and LESS THAN JAKE for a good while but then I discovered QUEERS and was just like "this is so amazing" and started to enjoy that style better than horns or fast drums and whiny voices.
It's not really that I grew out of it, I just found something that I like better. I still like NOFX but I don't really have the urge to listen to them because I find the current bands that I listen to now much better.
It's like a favorite song. You hear it and think nothing could be better, and nothing is. But then on someday you pop in a disc and on comes a track that catches your attention and suddenly that favorite song is just a little less appealing to you. And eventually as more songs come along that song is just another song.
Will I be listening to the Queers in 50 years? It's very possible. I bet it won't be my favorite band anymore. I mean right now there is all kinds of stuff that I've liked since I was a kid and I don't believe that will change. Like the beatles and all that other good oldies stuff.

I find that I don't so much change what I listen to, I just add to it.

dange, your little article seems to contradict yourself. you yell at Steve-o all the time about not liking Fat Wreck bands and stuff like that. But now you are saying that you dont enjoy them as much as you once did.

Actually I kind of agree w/ travis. You are like "how could steve not like choking victim anymore?" Well, maybe they are just a juvenile band.
And according to my sources the only tunes you listen to right now are pop punk and the vines.

I don't listen to about 90% of the trash I used to. And for good reason, I have found stuff that is much better. When I was listening to like shitty street-punk bands I was trying to fit in and do what everyone else is doing. Nowadays, I find what I like myself.
I feel good, too. Because if I caught myself listening to shit like The Vines or any of the million punk bands that are getting kids pants wet these days, I'd probably shoot myself. That is not to say I only like pop-punk, but it is definitely better than Pretty Girls Make Gays or whatever that neo-garage shit is.
And as for me not liking bands I used to, here's a good example...
Choking Victim... OK, first off, they're a bunch of phonies. None of them are Satanists. They're atheists. Whoop-dee-doo, I guess I should be scared now. You can sing all you want about being homeless and committing suicide, but when you're one of the biggest punk bands in the US, I wouldn't be complaining.
They've got enough money to tour, put out records, and generally do whatever they want in music. I love money, and I would love to be in a band that did much. BUT...
They're hiding the fact that they are becoming successful to still be credible with the crusty set of punk rock. If I was in their position, I would not be writing songs about using food-stamps and being poor. Because I guarantee they can afford to live in a decent apartment. There is nothing wrong with living like a normal human. But since it's not "punk". then they either don't do it, or don't tell anyone.
I think that is phony, and that is why i gave that stupid CD away and sold the 7". Also, I grew to hate ska. So that's out. That is just one example. Fuck that shit. All the mall kids can have the Victim. I'll take a successful band that grows up as they make money.

Do I see reflections of the Nort in your posts?
I was just agreeing with what travis said that you do kind of contradict yourself. And well that's how I saw it too.
I think you need to stop being a little baby. (for the record this is in a nonthreatening tone) And well, I don't really have much more to say, except to start a discussion on me pretending not liking music (or pretending to) because I'm afraid steve and night will make fun of me. I don't think this is true. I hate shellac, don cab, all that hardcore garbage and well if I was afraid they'd make fun of me wouldn't I pretend to like those bands?
There are things that I like that steve and night probably think are gay, but I don't really care because I like listening to them. Unlike you dange, I shall give examples. I like vanessa carlton (not so much to buy a cd) and also I really like Rufus Wainright. I still like nerf herder (not sure if they do), reel big fish, the beatles (especially hippie beatles).
Yes we do like a lot of the same stuff. But it was Steve that got us into the queers, sw, and mtx (and lots other) and that's primarily what I like and listen to.

It's not like Night and I are musical geniuses. Night has gotten me into some cool stuff and I him. But he does kind of like Fugazi which I give a big thumbs-down to. But he and I aren't slagging Ahmed Johnson for not liking anything (except Shellac).
