... of the so-called worst Queers CD eva. I ran with the grain (rather than against) and I agreed with all who said that they could find better garbage in a bum's asscrack than in the Queers follow up to PRC, titled "Beyond the Valley of the Assfuckers". Now it's time to update my thoughts:
When I first heard this album, I hated it. Ya know, when ya listen to "Stupid Fucking Vegan" and then you listen to "Drop the Attitude Fucker" you really really appreciate the latter in terms of talent and production. Beyond has a ton of horrible songs that seemed like they were written to take up space. I recently gave this album a listen just to randomize my queers listening habits, and wow was I amazed at just how good Beyond the Valley is.
I think the main trick to liking this album is ignoring how goofy some of the songs are... and ignoring lots of other things, like joe queer's vulgar rambling in every song. the bad production is also something to try and shake off, hatas wise.
Beyond the Valley and PRC are my favorite queers cd's at the moment, while Ben Weasel is my favorite song. Sorry none of my subjects or topics flow very well, but I'm trying to jump from one thing to another in hopes of covering everything that I'm aiming at... and yes, you heard me right, Beyond is my favorite queers cd right now! ...

Here are my BTV awards (everyone feel free to give their votes for whichever category):
Song with the best intro: That would definitely be I'm Not a Mongo Anymore. the raw vocal intro plus the raw evolution of Riot Doing HEroin equals great song!
Song that should be on any other Queers album just so that it's quality is not brought down by the fact that it's album contains the words 'Beyond' and 'Valley': My favorite song on BTV is Strangle the Girl. The lyrics are great, the chorus is so poppy and catchy, and Joe's voice sounds great. This song rocks, plain and simple.
I can't believe: Joe Queer wasted an actual 2 minutes of his life writing a guitar solo for Vegan.
Song I was turned off by but liked once I gave it a good try or two: I'm still hesitant to say it, but Little Rich Working Class Oi-Boy is an unbelievably awesome tune. Great solo and everything.
Best chorus: In my opinion, Uncouth has the funnest chorus to sing. Honorable mention to My Cunt's A Cunt, now that song has the goods!
Biggest example of good idea gone horribly wrong ever since the screenplay for Glitter was written: Bringin ol' Wimpy out of retirement.
Songs that don't help when it comes to trying to make BTV sound like a good album: Hmmm, Journey to the Center and I Just Called... are a couple that come to mind.
Maybe if a talent scout picks up these cool questions, they will introduce them to the grammy's and then Joe Queer can finally be proud of himself for making BTV.

Bierce, the queers are an awesome band, and just have happen to grow to be the favorite band of some of us. We aren't obsessed w/ them. They've got a lot of super great albums, and well they deserve some discussion on this board.

Oh wow, someone doubts the power of JQ. I am telling everyone this once and for all...
The Queers are the greatest band of all time. They took everything The Ramones and all the other great bands of our time did and made it better. Their live show is unparalleled. The rawest stuff imaginable to the sweetest songs you'll ever hear can be heard on any one Queers record.
And if you're looking for a message in your punk rock, you better go throw on a loincloth and lie down on Forbes, because you're looking for a one-way ticket to Streetpunk, USA. The Queers have no message except "have fun". That is all I need. All the best bands are about the same exact thing. It's just music, after all.
You can like other bands more than The Queers, or say they're not that great, but all the years I spent listening to "Grow Up" in the car mean a lot to me. I have never held such dedication for any one band. They are the greatest thing in the world to me, no matter what the naysayers may spout out.
When people ask what the big deal is, I just say: "Listen to the CD's, see 'em live... you'll know." If you don't know, you don't get it. For my money, there is nothing better in the world than hearing the first chord of "We'd Have a Riot Doing Heroin's" intro.

The Queers have been my favorite band in the world since spring of 2k1, which hasn't been that long ago... but it's true, they've stayed in spot #1, and totally kicked weezer out of that spot, and the Queers haven't moved since. They're unbelieveable, songs for everyone.... I'm a sucker for surf music, which surprised me to see that they had surf songs, but anyways, they have magnificent love songs (that never grow old), kick-ass attitute songs, fast songs, slow songs, songs with great production, songs with horrible production, songs with wimpy, songs with female guest vocals, songs with 3 chords, songs with 4 chords, songs with guitar solos, songs that are embedded into the beginning 10 minutes of every single Queers live set, songs that make us laugh at how awful they are, songs that are preceded by Joe Queer yelling the title of it, songs about beer, songs about female bodyparts, songs about being a fuckup, songs from the 80's, songs from the 90's, and songs from the 2k's, and if you're really lucky, maybe even a song about Ben Weasel!
Around Dec 14th, I had that bad feeling in the back of my mind, where I sensed that I was starting to get sick of the Queers... but it was a false alarm! I love them more than ever right now, and I'm content with them being the prime musical choice in my life!

One day in 11th grade, we were talking about the Queers around the lunch table and I had never really heard them except for Don't Back Down from Cinema Beer Nuts, and I didn't know what to expect. So I asked to borrow some and Steve gave me DBD and PRC and after school I was at Niz's house and I popped in PRC and heard like only the first couple songs and I thought "wow, this is amazing!" So then I got home and listened to them completely and fell in love, and they've been number one ever since.

Thats an invalid generalization... Minor Threat,7 seconds,AFI,Bad Religion,Dead Kennedys,gorilla biscuits all quality punk rock bands with good messages and there is nothing crusty about them... I tend to be more partial to music with a message as opposed to just "fun music"... I mean its cool that you guys like that and all,but I like to be conscious of the world around me and actually do things to make it better... I'm not throwing out any accusations here but dissing a band o because they have a message is not cool at all. People,can't be oblivious to whats going on forever. Minor Threat- Became Fugazi and started doing bongrips with the guys at 123 Pleasant Street, all the while playing shitty indie rock.
AFI- Started playing Misfits rip-offs and growing devil-locks. Kudos on signing to Dreamworks and doublefucking groupies, Davey Havok. Making records about Halloween... ummm... that inspires me. Danzig must be pleased. Too bad he's got a degenerative muscle disorder... haha. He's still short, too.
DK's- Not crusty? Check the shirt of every shit punk in the world... they usually have one. BW once said: "Any town with more than three DK shirts at the show is boring". I say, any Bay Area punk rock band espousing hippie politics over every single song, then scrambling for money and legal rights over re-releasing tunes (that are already easily available from Alternative Tentacles, I might add) aren't sticking to their guns that well.
Bad Religion- More concerned with their original guitarist keeping his smack habit in check, not to mention getting kicked off Atlantic for failing album sales, than singing about burning down the government anymore. Three guitarists and no drummer do not a band make.
Gorilla Biscuits- They were straight-edge... ummm... that's great, but uhhh.... 88' youth crew bores me. That's hardcore anyway.... that's all about messages. Punk rock should be a little different. And unless you're American Nightmare (whose singer is missin' a fuckin' hand! Ahhhh! Too bad they're nothing great.), mixing hardcore and punk is like oil and water these days. Too bad the GB's weren't metal.
7 Seconds- You're fuckin' old and your label sucks. Message, shmessage... you still drag your tired as around the country for money... way to stand up against corporate rock like you did in the 80's. I guess living in CA and playing in a rockabilly band is more your style these days, anyway, Kevin.

Oh yeah, they didn't. Just stupid tunes that let you have fun. Same as The Queers, same as all the great bands in punk rock. Don't get me wrong, I like bands like Minor Threat probably more than anyone here, but I like their songs because they're angry... not because they tell me not to drink, smoke, or take drugs. Minor Threat's best songs were about fighting anyway.
I'm not singling anyone out, either. This is just my opinion. Bands that preach a message usually let it come back to bite them in the ass. Bands that don't can only write bad tunes. No loss.
Besides... my favorite songs are love songs. What better message than a stupid tune about how much you like a girl? Always makes me feel better... and I don't need it on a t-shirt to let me know I'm being righteous.

Really my intent wasn't to try and debate on whether these bands were good or not,though I think they are all great,I was just trying to prove a point that you were painting with a wide brush... I'm just pointing out that crust and messages in punk rock do not necessarily go hand in hand
MInor Threat-had nothing to do with crust... and they didn't "become fugazi" I'm pretty sure Ian had another band in between minor threat and fugazi ,Anyways,Fugazi is not minor threat at all... its one of those maturity things like after a band goes through their punk rock phase... as of '95 Ian was still straight and vegetarian,and I know those rumors about him being a junky were very bogus..Unless of course he was lying in the interview I read.I'm not positive that he still holds straight edge principles...
Dk's-Whether you agree with their left wing extremist "hippy" views or not this band has some really well-written songs,lyrically speaking...I mean I love their tunes but whatever... Just because the crusties enjoy their music doesn't make them crust. Thats like saying that just because kids that suck mosh to the minus tide,that means that the band sucks too,that is certainly not the case.You can't judge a band soley on their fans... and besides what crusty would join an industrial band with Al Jourgensoun? can you picture Dave Exploited collaborating with Trent Reznor? my point exactly...
Bad Religion-still not crusty... and think about all the cds these guys have put out.. a couple are bound to be shitty. The truth remains though that these guys have made some really great punk rock and have educated political and intellectual opinions... How else do you become a punk rock legend?
GB's-some of their stuff could be argued as being HC but their most popular songs (i.e. "start today") were definitely punk... still not crusty
7 seconds-still not crusty in the least,once again,sometimes bands put out some shitty stuff... but that doesn't mean they are a shitty band
no,the Ramones didn't really have a message,but thats what makes the Clash 10 times better...they may have had fucked up teeth(and so did the Ramones) but they weren't crust
"and I don't need it on a t-shirt to let me know I'm being righteous."- I don't really know what you're talking about here but if someone wears a straight edge shirt or another type of attire that states a belief they have,its not intended to tell the person thats wearing the clothing to have that belief but rather to spread the belief(which they feel strongly about) to other people.... I'm going to get a shirt that says in big bold letters "punk rock with a message does not denote crustiness"

AFI-These guys have some deep meaningful tunes... Yeah,they were inspired by the Misfits and so what? Misfits were a great band (were keyword there)... and if you look more deeply into the Misfits songs they were not all were horror-oriented fun stuff... some had meaning and a message,but nobody takes the time to read and understand the lyrics these days or even when the Misfits were good...

Nort I don't see the reason you are painting the "crusty" line. Why does it matter if a band is crusty or not. DK's were definitely a Crust band. I would much rather listen to stupid love songs than any other songs all day long. They are just great. I could care less about a bands message. If it is good music then I'll listen to it. And the Queers have a whole lot of good music.
For the record, Screeching Weasel has their share of political songs with mssgs.

I wasn't implying that you are "crusty" nort, I was just wondering where the "crusty" factor even came in. It just appeared that you were basing a band has to be good just because they aren't crusty.
I've never liked DK, and I don't know much about them. If I think of a crust/streetpunk band then I think of DK and like Crass. I've never been a fan of any of those bands and well I don't really read anything about them or anything. So maybe I'm mistaken and just think because of the "every crust kid wears DK shirts" factor that they are crust. They still suck if not ;D
I used to be a fan of BR (the music, I could care less about the mssg), but then they just got real old real quick. I can still stand them, but I won't waste time listening to them. Like I could probably still listen to Recipe For Hate but I won't.
